Description
Inspired by the folklore surrounding pelicans feeding their own breasts to their young and how this is often used as symbolism on gravestones of women who died during childbirth, sacrificing themselves for their young.
This particular piece was part of a series of works I created based around traditional sailor’s tattoo’s where the pelican was often thought as having the power to save drowning sailors in their pouch, or that they would carry sailor’s souls to heaven.
